According to a brass plaque on the exterior of the pub, “the Globe is an old and popular name and was established during the reign of Charles I. As a symbol the globe has historically been an emblem of Portugal and was used to advertised Portugese drinks on sale.” The image of a globe symbolized Portugal, whose mariners pioneered exploration of the world’s oceans, and the “Portugese drinks” included port, sherry, and madeira.
