Methodist church (Wesleyan), Chapmangate, Pocklington, Yorks. Architect: Edward Taylor of York (1831-1908). 1864. Described by Nikolaus Pevsner and David Neave as "[a] handsome red brick pedimented building with stone details. Large portico supported by six Doric columns" (649). Inside is the usual spacious hall, still complete with gallery.
The impressive complex is completed by ministers’ houses which flank the church on both sides, "to the left of 1864, to the right, 1869 by Thomas Grant" (Pevsner and Neave 649-50). Grant (1823-1907) son of a bricklayer/hotel-keeper, "built and replaced most of the buildings in the town centre [of Pocklington] in the late Victorian period" ("Thomas Grant"). There is a (former) Wesleyan day school opposite, which was also designed by Grant.
