This shows St John holding his chalice, with his symbol, a very lively eagle, which also has a halo. The text, "ego Joannes vidi sanctam civitatem Jerusalem novam" refers to his vision of the New Jerusalem, to be found in English in Revelation, 21, 2. The flowers at the lower edge betray a love of this earth, as well.
