Honor Appleton's illustrating career began when she was studying at the Royal Academy Schools. She illustrated over 150 books, developing "a very delicate watercolour style that captured the innocent world of children, their adventures and their life" ("Honor Charlotte Appleton (1879-1951)"). She was influenced both by Kate Greenaway's delicate watercolors and by Heath Robinson's and Arthur Rackham's use of line and large white spaces.
