A typically sentimental image, which demonstrates once again Barnes’s sympathy for the poor and humble. His positive view of the lower orders made him an ideal illustrator for Evangelical magazines, which stressed the need to treat the less fortunate with compassion and kindness , even if there was no engagement with the question of equality between the ranks.
