‘Oh Sergeant McFarlane,' 1893. Photomechanical reproduction of a pen and ink drawing. 3½ x 3 inches. An illustration in Hood’s Humorous Poems,196. This composition exemplifies Brock’s talent for social comedy which combines incongruous situations with close observation of facial types and costumes; though best remembered for his studies of Regency dress and the world of the polite upper-classes, Brock also celebrates a robust and mainly sympathetic vision of people of the street. Leech is his exemplar.
