‘Richard Refuses to Look upon the Holy City.’ Wood engraving by Edmund Evans. 3½ x 4¼ inches. Illustration in James Doyle’s A Chronicle of England, London: Longman, 1864, 197. This scene shows the moment when Richard 1, having failed to capture Jerusalem from Saladin, refuses to contemplate the city. Then King’s figure is shown in minute detail, and the artist once again emphasises the landscape which in Evans’s hand is rendered in saturated colours.
