And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. [Luke 2: 17-18]
The stable with the holy family inside appears at the extreme left of the picture. Note the bagpipe at lower right, the ducks and vegetation at left, and the three dogs at the middle and right — examples of Schnorr von Carolsfeld’s detailed realism that he combines with the supernatural angels and heavenly light.
