Your beggar is ever …

'Your beggar is ever … ’

Alfred Garth Jones

1902

Wood engraving

6 x 3¼ inches

Charles Lamb, The Letters of Elia, facing 238.

Jones’s design clinches the political satire, with the beggar very much the ‘just antipode to your King.’ The diagonal lines in the background and the emphasis on negative space are distinctive features which Jones draws from the semiotics of Art Nouveau.
