Punished for not accepting God's will when William failed to return from battle, a scared Leonora is borne to her doom by the false knight. Coiling snakes frame the stanza itself, while robed figures fly alongside the horse, bearing her coffin. Two of the ghoulish figures above (to the right) bear pick-axe and spade for the interment. This is, in effect, her "funeral train."
