Jesus and Peter

c.1900
North transept east
St Peter's Church, Burhill Road
Hersham, Surrey
This two-light window in memory of Sidney Brooks, who died in 1900, shows Jesus with a shepherd's crook saying to Peter: "Thou art Peter. Upon this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16, 18). Peter is holding the keys to the gate of heaven, symbolic of his authority. Above in the tracery is the Lamb of God, and below, Jesus is telling his disciples, "Go ye and preach the gospel" (see Mark 16, 15). The usual pinnacled Gothic canopies crown the scene.
