This summaryof the novel is from Ernest Baker and James Packman,
Luke Sharp, the lawyer, plots to abduct an heiress, and actually proves her dead and buried; but his nefarious plans are overset, chiefly by the agency of Mr Cripps, an original whose raciness and humour are characteristic of Blackmore's country-folk. Rural Oxfordshire is the scene, and most of the persons introduced are homely and rude.
