Dr. John Rae (1813-93) studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and in 1833 was hired by the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1846-47 he participated in two exploratory expeditions to the Canadian arctic, and in 1848 he accompanied Sir John Richardson on his search for the lost Franklin expedition. In 1853-54 on an expedition to King William�s Land he heard tales from Inuit hunters about the fate of the lost polar explorers, and recovered numerous artifacts.
