A rather poignant letter. Scan of a letter to (?) Frank Pepper, Esq., written by Meredith near the end of his life, obtained at Dorking Museum, Surrey: "Dear Sir I am indebted to you for the trouble you have taken in sending me the enclosed résumé of the lecture on my works at Plymouth, & I am glad to be told of an effort to make them known in that district, Yours truly George Meredith." Meredith was supposed to be much revered at this time: John Lucas says that his reputation "grew steadily until his death" (1). But evidently he was still grateful for any attention he might receive.
