The village of Cookham was formerly a market town, and the tolls of the "New Market" are noted in the Domesday-book, as amounting to 20s. The manor has, time immemorial, appertained to the crown, and the tenants, as belonging to the ancient royal demesne, are toll-free in all markets, and exempt from serving on juries. [60]
