orn October 1940 in Whitehead, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, Kenneth Lynn was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, studied architecture at the Belfast School of Architecture (1959-1962) and the Oxford School of Architecture (1964-66), and was elected Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architecture in 1968. He worked in Local Government Architecture (1966-84), in the Housing, Schools and Civic Offices sectors, progressing from Assistant Architect to Group Leader.
In 1983, he completed the self-build construction of a family home in Kent with top-floor office accommodation, and in 1984 set up practice as Kenneth Lynn Associates. Work included flats, houses, care-homes and restaurants. From 1990 onwards, with the encouragement and enthusiastic help of his wife Sylvia, property improvement, house-building and a long-running barn conversion in Norfolk (shown on the right here) gradually took over. Since 2000, commissions have been accepted only from the members of the family.
To study architecture is to study how humans relate to each other and to their environment, and touches every aspect of being human; so Kenneth continues to enjoy and be inspired by the subject.
