Inscribed by the artist on the threshold of the doorway: "I AM NIGHT & BRING AGAIN / HOPE OF PLEASURE REST FROM PAIN / THOUGHTS UNSAID TWIXT LIFE AND DEATH / MY FRUITFUL SILENCE QUICKENETH"; signed and dated by Burne-Jones, too, and painted as one of a pair with Morning.
Night was a favourite subject with Victorian Symbolist artists. — Dennis T. Lanigan.
