A Meadow beneath Mountains

A Meadow beneath Mountains. Edward Reginald Frampton. Signed and dated “'97.” Oil on board. 8 x 10 inches. [Click on image to enlarge it.]

The Maas Gallery Site points out that this is an “early work by Edward Reginald Frampton, who was the son of a stained glass designer (also Edward Frampton) who worked for Clayton and Bell, and from whom Frampton received his early training. Although he was aware of Burne-Jones's work for stained glass before, the retrospective exhibition of Burne-Jones at Birmingham in the winter of 1898-9 pointed him to his mature Symbolist manner. This picture is an early step towards the abstract landscapes in the backgrounds to his allegorical paintings.” — George P. Landow
