This is the preliminary sketch for The Blind Basket-Maker with his First Child making us wonder whether this was the common practice for Halliday to make a small oil sketch in preparation for his major works. If so, none of the others are known to survive, but it was certainly a common practice amongst Victorian artists. — Dennis T. Lanigan
