Martineau exhibited this painting in November 1859 at The Seventh Annual Winter Exhibition of Cabinet Pictures, Sketches and Drawings at Ernest Gambart’s the French Gallery, Pall Mall, London. Holman Hunt exhibited his closely related painting The School Girl’s Hymn at the same time. The critic for The Spectator in his review of this exhibition noted: "Mr. Hunt has a companion student in R. B. Martineau, who portrays the same subject, profile wise, looking down upon ‘the pet of the brood,’ – a little dove in her hand. [Continued below]
