This is an early example of Clara Montalba's work in Venice, and shows both her love of light effects, and her delight in the city itself. It is interesting to compare it with her later, more impressionistic, Salute of 1908, in the collection of the Royal Watercolour Society — and indeed with Turner's handling of the beautiful basilica in its equally beautiful setting. — Jacqueline Banerjee
