The Sphinx

The Sphinx. Fun 58 (17 October 1893): 159. Text beneath the caption: “‘When is the country going to know what is going to be done?’ — Mr. Goschen at Hartlepool.” Source: Hathi Digital Library Trust web version of a copy in the University of Minnesota library. Click on image to enlarge it.

The sphinx, which has the face of Gladstone, sits on a base labelled “Home Rule Bill” while the words “Welsh Disestablishment” appear on its flank and “Scotch Disestablishment” on its beard — indications of worry that if the Irish acquired Home Rule, the Welsh and Scots would be next, the very issue that led Joseph Chamberlain to abandon the liberal party. — George P. Landow
