Andrew Crowther, Hon Secretary, W. S. Gilbert Society, kindly e-mailed to point out that “This piece is by W.S. Gilbert. His parody reviews were amongst his early hits while at Fun, alongside the Bab Ballads, and they contain many examples of his mordant humour- like the stage direction in this one: "Tells her a long story that lasts twenty minutes. Any jumble about the Arctic regions, polar bears, and second sight will do.”
