The Girl's Own Paper, a weekly periodical costing one penny, started publication in January 1880. The editor for the first 28 years, Mr Charles Peters, intended to use the magazine “to foster and develop that which was highest and noblest in the girlhood and womanhood of England […] putting the best things first, and banishing the worthless from his pages”. These laudable aims were expressed in a dense mixture of stories, educational articles, answers to correspondents, and high quality steel engravings in 16 quarto pages. From the outset the magazine was also available bound into monthly collections, or as the Girl's Own Annual, handsomely bound either by individuals or by the publisher the Religious Tract Society. -- Tom Ward
