Commentary

Charles Edwin Fripp, Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society (4 September 1854 — 1906) was both an illustrator and war artist. He was a special artist for The Graphic and The Daily Graphic, providing pictorial coverage of various conflicts in South Africa, including the Kaffir War of 1878, the Zulu War of 1886, and the Boer War. In 1889, the artist visited British Columbia on his way to Japan, and settled for five years at Enderby in the North Okanagan, east of Kamlopps. The illustration Across the North American Continent by The Canadian Pacific Railway — Mountain Goat Hunting in British Columbia undoubtedly belongs to this period. His brother, Robert McKay Fripp, was a Vancouver architect. Charles died in Montreal, Quebec.
