The poster shows a woman in Salvation Army uniform, the red lining of her cape billowing out like a flag as she raises her hand above some beseeching and desperate people. By 1908, Edwin Gifford Lamb could say of the Army, "In no country has its rate of progress been more remarkable than in the United States, where in point of numbers, the local organization now ranks second only to that of Great Britain" (8). This dramatic poster suggests the prominence and success of the Salvation Army in America by the final stages of the First World War. — Jacqueline Banerjee.
