St Mary's Lighthouse

St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, North Tyneside. John Miller & Co., 1897. According to Peter Ashley, the lighhouse is 260' high, and it took 640 blocks of Heworth stone and 750,000 bricks to construct the lighthouse and keepers' cottages. Of special interest is the information that there used to be a monastic cell here, the light from which would have served a similar purpose to the lighthouse in days gone by.
