WILSON LONDON.” Inscription on edge: “ART-UNION OF LONDON. 1866.” The reverse contains a detail from West’s most famous painting, The Death of General Wolfe (1770), which depicts the general as a martyr of the British Empire and commemorates his army’s victory over the French and England’s subsequent control of North America — well, for a dozen years at most.
