Introduction

Hugues Protat was appointed Modelling Master at the Stoke School of Art in 1855, after Albert Carrier (Craig 6). Here, one of his students was John Lockwood Kipling, artist father of the Rudyard Kipling. From auction sites like Christie's it is clear that Protat was also one of the most highly regarded majolica artists at Minton. He designed furniture as well (see "The Arts and Crafts Home.")
