Tim Willasey-Wilsey explains that “the Buffs were the famous East Kent Regiment, the 3rd Regiment of Foot. They fought in South Africa and were present at several of the battles (although many of their dead were caused by disease). They were called the Buffs because of their buff facings (collar and sleeves) on their red tunics.”
