The panel was originally attributed to Robert Anning Bell, since it is very much in his style. But Williams was taught by Anning Bell, as well as by Charles John Allen, which may account for the mis-attribution. An issue of the Studio, featuring a drawing of hers, suggests that this particular piece was her work rather than his:
The drawing is headed "Reviews" and captioned: "Little St Bride of the Mantle (see Liverpool Studio Talk) by GERTRUDE A. WILLIAMS.""
