The new steam-ship Lamont has been built bv Messrs. Robert Napier and Sons, of Glasgow, for the old-established house of Messrs. Jardine, Matheaon, and Go., of London and China, and is to be engaged in the China and Japan trade. This vessel differs, as shown in oar Illustration, from tne screw-steamers hitherto sent ont from this coontry by the introduction of large saloons on the upper deck with extended wings running round them, and projecting beyond the hull of the vessel, these saloons again forming a hurricane-deck the whole breadth of the Teasel, and for the greater part of the length of it. The advantages of this arrangement are considered to be that much better ventilation is obtained, as the wings projecting round the saloon and the hall set as awnings, thereby adding much to the comfort of passengers in those hot latitudes. The Lamont, like all the vessels constructed by Messrs. Napier, are finished with the utmost perfection of workmanship, and is a very elegant as well as a powerful-looking vessel. Her dimensions are — length, 240 ft.; breadth, 34 1/2 ft.; depth, 22 ft.; tonnage, 1890 tons, b.m. Her engines, constructed also by Messrs. R. Napier and Sons, the builders, are overhead beam-geared, of 200-horse power, propelling her at a speed of twelve knots an hour. The aooommodation on board is of a very superior kind, the chief saloon is forward, and the cabins for passengers, captain, and offioers are round tbs aides of the deck-saloon. There is also a cabin aft for Chinese passengers. This is the fifth steamer that Messrs. Napier have built for the same owners, the former ones being the Lancefield, Fiery Cross, Chevy Chase, and Clan Alpine.
