Born in Streatham, Joan Drew was one of the five daughters of architect and landowner Richard Drew and his wife Ann. A frail child in an artistic family, she found her outlet in embroidery, studying the exquisite examples of historic embroidery at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She was much influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, and became a well-known designer and embroiderer, passing on her knowledge to others. She was also a useful contributor to, and local leader of, the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society (NUWSS), making designs for their campaigns. — Jacqueline Banerjee
