The Sancta Maria banner is perhaps the most beautiful of all the banners at St Augustine's Church, Kilburn, London NW6. It has crowns and lilies at each corner, and a most intricate and elaborate oval frame around the central figure of the Virgin Mary, holding the Infant Jesus. It stands out both for its skill and effect. Mary is truly regal, with crown and sceptre, yet a modest downwards gaze. Jesus holds a tiny orb, the child's expression echoing that of the mother. Radiance streams forth in gold pennants all around them, glancing on birds and flowers in the background. It is really a masterpiece. [Click on the images to enlarge them.]
