‘Miss Juniper’, 1889. Chromolithograph of a watercolour by Georgina Bowers. 7 x 10¼ inches. Unnumbered plateHunting in Hard Times. One of the artist’s dynamic panoramic compositions. Miss Juniper is shown to the right, struggling to progress. The caption reads: ‘Miss Juniper comes out now and then on her lazy pony. John actually stopped the other day, to help her a wretched little gap – so unlike John!’ John is one of two comic characters in the book – the other is supposedly the designer, who is identified as an ‘old maid.’ These comedic types recall Leech’s comic personae, such as Mr Briggs. The handwriting is probably the artist’s.
