‘Partridge Shooting.’ 1878. Wood engraving of a drawing by Alfred William Cooper; engraved by Edmund Evans. 11 x 8½ inches. Frontispiece for Sporting Sketches with Pen and Pencil. Cooper’s interest in fishing and blood sports makes him the ideal illustrator for this type of book, and he is given equal billing on the title page with the author, Francis Francis. Cooper seems to have known all of the procedures, equipment and routines associated with hunting, and his journalistic approach to his subjects endows his illustrations with an intense immediacy, offering a detailed and dynamic record of the ‘look’ of the time.
