Roger, Edith's brother, arrives home at the Wessex port of Havenpool from the Newfoundland trade after an absence of several years (p. 137, top). Sunset beyond the quay casts the figures in the rowboat into shadow, and we see Roger's vessel only in outline. Hardy in the letterpress is already describing Horseleigh's courtship of Edith on that same quay.
