Context of the Illustration

Lord Salisbury (Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, third Marquess of Salisbury, 1830-1903), who served three times as Prime Minister between 1885 and 1902, sits reading Cycling Tours on the Continent flanked by a basket with papers labeled “Pretoria,” “Berlin,” “Paris,” “Australia,” and “Dublin Castle” on his left, and a box of papers concerning coronation honours at his right. A chemistry apparatus appears in the left distance, while on the shelf behind him are bookends that resemble the former Prime Ministers W. E. Gladstone(1808-98) and Benjamin Disraeli (1804-81).
