‘Tsarevna Loveliness Inexhaustible.’ 1901. Wood engraving, cut by Charles March Gere (1869-1957). 3¾ x 5½ inches; facing 103. A Pre-Raphaelite idyll which combines psychological drama with intricate ornamentation. The outlined swans on the bed and the floral decorations on the drapes recall Rossetti’s neo-medieval illustrations in the ‘Moxon Tennyson’ (1857). Sleigh infuses a strong sense of urgency as the prince learns forward to kiss the beloved. [Click on image to enlarge it.]
