Biographical and Critical Information
Simon Houfe provides a somewhat different idea of Hardy’s life and career than do Brigid Peppin and Lucy Micklethwait, who describe him as “a painter, illustrator, and metalworker,” and a prolific illustrator of adventure stories at his best when depicting “figures in action.” Houfe, who points out that he married the artist Ida Wilson Clarke, characterizes him as an historical painter “at his best in costume romances and adolescent series.” — George P. Landow
