The Jôgi, seeing the lad, called out fiercely, "What do you want here?"
John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911)
1894
Illustration for "The Son of Seven Mothers" in Tales of the Punjab: Told by the People, facing p.99.
The little prince successfully confronts the Jôgi, a "hideous old creature" who is the king of all the demons, and who spends all his time milking his "tall, white, and beautiful" cow (97). Of course, the handsome lad with his bow and arrow ends up marrying a princess, and there is a happy ending for all his mothers, too. The cow is the real star of this composition! The stories, with their scholarly accounts at the back, were authentic folktales (see James 373).
