Fair Sitter (to exhausted photographer): — “Shall I smile?” by Leonard Raven-Hill (1867-1942). 1904; signed "L Raven Hill" lower left. Punch (29 June 1904): 460. From the Internet Archive online version of a copy in the University of Iowa Library. Click on image to enlarge it

This cartoon exemplifies the artist’s ability to draw facial expressions with a few strokes — note that on the harried photographer — as well as creating an environment in a similar manner. We know the style of the table that appears between the two people immediately. He here differs from Du Maurier and most other of the earlier great Punch cartoonists, who tend to create complete, detailed scenes.
