The good-natured dog
Harrison Weir
1857
Wood engraving by J Greenaway.
6¼ x 5 inches
Illustration for Funny Dogs with Funny Tales, p.77.
An anthropomorphic image which comments on the demeanour and behaviour of a good natured gent. Influenced by the art of J. J. Grandville, the image also links forward to the moving pictures of Walt Disney and other film-makers working in the same tradition. Weir’s characterization further links to the anthropomorphism deployed by Charles Dickens.
