St Matthew's Church, Ashford, Surrey. This is the window at the west of the north aisle, and it was installed in memory of Richard Gosling, who had died in the previous year. (An earlier Hardman window was a memorial to an earlier Richard Gosling, who died in 1873; these were no doubt father and son: the older one was 78 when he died, and the younger 68). Having shown John so close to Jesus at the Last Supper, the window illustrates the touching episode in the Bible when Jesus tells his "beloved disciple" that he should take care of Mary in the place of her son: "And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home" (John 19:25-27). Calvary can be seen in the background, and the crescent moon above; Mary is lost in grief.
