Previous Episode: The Old London Street
The Old London Street, courtesy of the New York Public Library.
In this episode, join Dory for a deep dive into the history of The Old London Street, a Victorian reproduction of a London street as it might have looked (and worked) before the ravages of the 1655 Great Plague and subsequent devastating fire. This architectural marvel opened in South Kensington as part of the 1884 International Health Exhibition. Intended to teach Londoners of the dangers of urban crowding, inflammable building materials, and lack of clean running water, the exhibit instead became a hub of commercialized nostalgia for a vanishing urban past. Other cities quickly seized on the idea and made it their own, bringing urban history to life for city-dwellers from Leeds and Glasgow to New York City. Written by Dory Agazarian. Listen:
