Apparently Soane had commissioned another Italian painting, from Turner, at this time. But he rejected Turner's finished work, instead giving a new commission to Callcott. David Blayney Brown suggests that this one was more to Soane's taste: "cool and sweet in tone," lacking the the kind of tension found in Turner, it "suggests the effect of a window thrown open on a clear day when the panelling behind which it hangs is unfolded" (42).
