Here, Horsley was painting a portrait of his brother-in-law: Brunel had married the artist's eldest sister, Mary Elizabeth Horsley (1813-1881), in 1836.
Given by the sitter's son, Isambard Brunel, in 1895, this portrait is in the Primary Collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 979). Reproduced here by kind permission.
