Exeter landscape and animal painter. Member of the well-known West Country family of landscape painters and father of Frederick John. He originally trained as a stone mason and was self-taught as an artist. Copied a great deal of Landseer’s work including The Kill at an Otter Hunt, dated 1855, and made a considerable amount of money by producing copies of Landseer’s famous painting, The Monarch of the Glen. Painted The Poltimore Hunt, dedicated to Lord Poltimore, a subject which was later engraved by J. Harris and pub. by William Clifford, Exeter, c.1865 and The End of a Day’s Shoot.... — Wingfield 319
