by Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942). Oil on canvas. H 183 x W 107 cm. Collection: Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter. Accession no. 259/2008, given by the artist in 1931.
Widgery was known for his coastal and marine paintings as well as his moorland scenes, and worked with oils as well as watercolours. He did full justice to the coastal scenery of Devon and Cornwall. This painting is full of interest, with several people on a short wooden pier, a rowing boat and a yacht on the water, and a marked contrast of colours from the sunset glow. There seems to be some surface damage to the canvas.
