Untitled Moorland Scene, by Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942). Oil on canvas. H 110.5 x W 161.5 cm. Collection: Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter. Accession no. 257/2008, given by the artist (?), 1931. As so often, Widgery has chosen to paint moorland under a cloudy sky, allowing the play of light to enliven and diversify the colours of the landscape. The moorland here is far from flat and featureless, and its green is made up of endlessly varying shades. Sky was important to Widgery in and of itself, and he made a number of cloud studies.
